Political Career
Deve Gowda joined the Congress Party in 1953, remaining a member until 1962. In that year, he was elected to the Karnataka Legislative Assembly. He served as the Leader of the Opposition from 1972 to March 1976 and again from November 1976 to December 1977. In 1991, he was elected as a Member of Parliament from Hassan. He played a crucial role in the victory of the Janata Party in 1994 and became the 14th Chief Minister of Karnataka on December 11, 1994.
Challenges and Contributions
During the Emergency in 1975 and 1976, Deve Gowda was imprisoned. However, upon his election as an MP in 1991, he took significant steps to address the state's issues, particularly those affecting farmers.
Becoming Prime Minister
Deve Gowda transitioned directly from Chief Minister to Prime Minister. Following the collapse of Atal Bihari Vajpayee's government on May 31, 1996, he resigned from the Prime Minister's office. On June 1, 1996, he was appointed as the leader of a coalition of 24 parties, supported by Congress, and became the 11th Prime Minister of India. However, due to difficulties in aligning with Congress's policies, he resigned from the position in April 1997.
